| Best Wishes to Marlon Byrd |
[22 May 2011|09:28pm] |
|
Marlon Byrd is on the DL and will be out indefinitely after being hit in the face by a pitch :( He suffered some facial fractures and has some vision issues in the eye that was hit. Doctors say he should recover, however.
I wish Marlon Byrd a swift recovery and hope he feels better soon.

| 2011 Cubs/MLB preview |
[31 Mar 2011|08:29pm] |
Spring training is over, the 25 heading north have been selected, and this season will begin for the Cubs April 1 vs. the Pirates. Usually, I'm optimistic at this time..but not this year. I just don't see this team having what it takes to get to the playoffs..and even if they do, making any progress won't be likely. It's certainly possible, given a number of career years and players exceeding their projections, along with not giving all that many games away..this team cannot afford to blow games or give anything less than maximum effort. Mike Quade doesn't look like he'll tolerate anything less, but this will be his first real exposure to the Chicago media machine and the impatience of Cubs fans. ( Pitchers ) ( Speaking of offense.. ) ( Division predictions ) Overall, this is going to be a transitional/rebuilding year..even though Hendry and Ricketts would never admit that. Attendance is probably going to be down and getting tickets to games (especially if the team doesn't do very well at first) will be quite a bit easier than previous years (especially when folks have to dump their tickets on reseller sites at rock bottom prices). If the team gets on a good roll, though, us terminally loyal fans will come in droves..otherwise, we could be looking at a very different team one year from now.
We don't have much speed (as usual) and we'll need to hit lots of doubles, triples, and homers to get any runs across, as manufacturing runs won't work most of the time..not a lot of steals, not a lot of guys who can go first to third on a single..and probably not a lot of good bunters. I can also see us throwing away games due to bad defense/situational awareness/baserunning..minimizing that is absolutely essential to any kind of attempt at a playoff run. I think we'll finish 4th, but I'd love to be wrong..and stranger things have happened. Let's go Cubs.

| No obligatory ticket/virtual waiting room post? |
[25 Feb 2011|10:41am] |
It says alot when nobody is posting about tickets, waiting in the virual waiting room (which looks different this year), or frustrations from not getting games or excitement because of getting tickets.
I have a friend down in Mesa and all of them say the chatter at this year's spring training is better and looser than the past few years. Quade is hands-on and running lots of fundamental drills. They say the players have been reporting how it is a complete 180 from a Lou camp. Makes me a little hopeful...

| "'Wait till next Year: The Saga of the Chicago Cubs" DVD? Anybody? |
[30 Jan 2011|02:07pm] |
|
Hey folks! I'm just wondering if ANYBODY has had any luck tracking down a DVD copy/download of that 'Wait till next Year" documentary that aired on HBO back in 06? Just wondering as I'd love to purchase a copy.
Take it easy and here's hoping to a great 2011 Cubs season!

Koyie Hill, Reed Johnson to return By Bruce Levine
CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs and backup catcher Koyie Hill avoided arbitration, while the team also signed outfielder Reed Johnson to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.
Hills gets a one-year deal for $850,000, while the team did not reveal Johnson's contract details.
Hill, 31, has spent the past four seasons in the Cubs organization, backing up Geovany Soto the past two. He batted .214 with one home run and 17 RBIs last season.
Johnson, 34, returns to the Cubs after a season with the Dodgers. He played in Chicago from 2008-09 and batted .287. He's a lifetime .281 hitter who plays primarily left and center field.
Bruce Levine covers baseball for ESPNChicago.com and ESPN 1000.

As lousy a season as it's been, it sure is nice to sweep St. Louis. That and the Marlon Byrd play in the All Star game have to be the highlights of the season, no?

ESPN just reported that Lou is done after today's game. He isn't waiting out the season...he's bailing. Can't say that I blame him.

| Derrek Lee traded to Atlanta |
[18 Aug 2010|05:47pm] |
|
From Len & Bob's Twitter:
"It's official. The Cubs acquired minor leaguer RHPs Robinson Lopez,Tyrelle Harris & LHP Jeffrey Lorick from Braves for Derrek Lee & cash."
Unlike the Lilly trade, this trade I can understand. Lee was in the last season of his contract, and it was unlikely the Cubs would try to re-sign him. Best thing to do would be to try and get some prospects while he's with the team rather than let his contract expire and get bupkus.
Still, I hate to see Lee go.

| Another trade by the Cubs.. |
[11 Aug 2010|11:46pm] |
To the Giants: 2B Mike Fontenot
To us: OF Evan Crawford (minor leaguer, class A)
This was one of those rare occurrences where the traded player just had to walk across the ballpark to his new team. But yeah, the Cajun Connection is now on the opposite sides of the Dodgers/Giants rivalry.
Darwin Barney has been called up from AAA Iowa to take Fontenot's spot.

| Off Topic? |
[04 Aug 2010|03:59pm] |
If this isn't allowed, please let me know and I will remove.
I was just wondering if anyone's been to the NYCE Stadium Club at Miller Park? I have tickets to one of the games and it includes passes to the NYCE Stadium Club, but I can't find much information on it other than it's a private dining club. Do they include any kind of food or drinks (like at the Batters Eye @ Wrigley) or do you have to pay for everything?
Thanks in advance!

| Uncle Ted was up to something.. |
[13 Jun 2010|09:06pm] |
|
Ted Lilly is doing something at Wrigley Field tonight on ESPN. I'm not going to mention what it is, but he's definitely doing something.
...until fucking Juan Pierre ruined it. A clean single.
But, Marmol gets the job done and the Cubs win 1-0 having only given up 1 hit. By far the most excitement the Cubs have had lately. The Stanley Cup needs to visit Wrigley more often, apparently..
